What browser should I use?

Firefox is the recommended Internet browser for Moodle. It is very likely you will encounter problems if using Internet Explorer or Safari. Google Chrome works well, but you may occasionally notice problems such as embedded videos not loading.

Why am I receiving blank emails from my instructor?

This is probably because you read your email in a private account. Some private accounts cannot read the HTML code that Moodle sends the message in. If you click on the untitled attachment under the blank message, you will be able to read the message. If you use a third-party email client such as Apple Mail, Gmail, or Thunderbird, you should always be able to view messages sent to you through Moodle.

My instructor says to go on Moodle, but I do not see their course under "My Courses" what should I do?

There are two possible answers:

  1. Your instructor may not have made the course site available to students yet. Check with your instructor to ensure his or her course site is available.
  2. You have not been enrolled in the course site. Students are automatically enrolled in course sites they've registered for, but it may take up to 24 hours before you actually gain access to course sites in Moodle. If you need immediate access, ask your instructor to enroll you.

I'm a cross-registered student, how do I gain access to Moodle?

Cross-registered students can login to Moodle just like any other student, but with one extra step.

First, use your Stratford CCA (Campus Computer Account) username and password to login. This initial step will create a Moodle account for you, if you didn't already have one.

Second, inform your instructor(s) that you have successfully logged into Moodle so that they may enroll you in their course(s).

After your instructor enrolls you in his/her Moodle site, the course(s) you've registered for will appear under the My Courses area of Moodle. Click the name of the course to enter it.

Self-Service portal and Moodle are synced daily. Please check back at a later date. If your class still does not show up In Moodle, make sure your advisor has approved your courses.

I cannot login into Moodle. Why?

Use the same username/password you use for the Self-Service portal. Here is the Moodle site: https://online.stratford.edu

Why do I have to enter my login and password every time I login into Moodle?

For security reasons, you are asked to login into Moodle every time.

How do I reply to a post in a weekly announcement?

While you are able to respond to general forums, no students are able to reply to News Forums, which is likely the type of forum your instructor is using to send out weekly announcements.

How do I reply to a forum question?

Unless it is a News Forum, which does not have a reply function, once you click on the Forum link you should see another link, in the bottom corner of the Forum post, entitled 'Reply'. Click on the Reply link. Check out the job aid on its.startford.edu for more information.

Why am I forced to get emails from all the discussion boards?

You are not forced to receive any email notifications from Moodle at all unless the forum was setup that way. To stop receiving posts from forums you are already subscribe to you need to open the forum then under the Administration block on the right you have the option to unsubscribe from the forum and stop receiving posts altogether.

  • One exception: if the instructor has chosen to make the forum a forced subscription you have no choice but to receive emails on every discussion posting.

To unsubscribe to a forum discussion:

  1. Log into Moodle
  2. Go to the course in question
  3. Select the discussion forum you want to unsubscribe
  4. Under Forum Administration in the right hand side, click on Unsubscribe form this forum (see image below)
    • You will see a message like the following: Michelle Metzler will NOT be notified of new posts in ‘Discussion 1’
  5. The change is instant

How do I delete or edit a post?

Students have 30 minutes after making a post to delete or edit it. To edit the post, view the post by navigating to it through the forum, and click the "edit post" link in the bottom right-hand corner of the post. After the 30 minutes, you will need to contact your instructor.

I am unable to submit an assignment. Why?

If the due date for that assignment has passed, email your instructor for that course to see if they can extend the submission date for you.

Can I change an answer before I submit a quiz?

Usually, students do have the opportunity to review/change answers before final submission, however, quizzes may vary. Check with your instructor on the quiz policy for that course.

How do you print the pages of a quiz?

There is no function to allow for the printing of a quiz.

Moodle keeps timing out. Why?

The Moodle site is set to timeout users after 2 hours of inactivity. Potential issues that would make that more frequent are internet connectivity issues and leaving the site.

Courses that I registered for are missing and the class section is blank. Why?

If your academic advisor has approved your courses, please check back tomorrow. It may be that the Self-Service portal and Moodle have not sync'd up yet.

I can only see week 1 of my course. Why?

The course content may not be available or it may be hidden. Check with your instructor.

It is usual to see the links to your courses from last term for a bit into the new term. You may change your view of courses/hide courses by performing the following steps...

By next term, those courses, will be removed entirely from your list

How do copy/paste the content of a word document into Moodle?

Generally we try to dissuade people from copying and pasting a document from Word to Moodle. Unfortunately, Microsoft Word is full of hidden code that doesn't translate well when copy/pasted into Moodle, which can lead to some horrendous looking pages.

  • If your assignment is to upload a file, no copy/paste is needed.
  • If you are attempting to reply to a forum post, you can do so within Moodle directly (instead of "on paper" which you then copy).
  • If you'd rather just copy and paste certain bits of the document, we suggest copy/paste from a different word processor, such as Google Docs because there is less formatting to battle.

How do I submit 2 separate files for the same assignment?

That all depends on how your instructor has set up the assignment. I'd recommend emailing your instructor to see if that is an option for your course.

There is no submit button to submit my assignment. Why?

It may be that the instructor has imposed an availability window on submissions and the open date has not yet started. Check with your instructor to see if there are any date submissions attached to your assignment.

I have posted the wrong assignment for grading. How can I post the correct one?

Please reach out to your instructor. They can likely delete your erroneous upload and allow you to submit another. They will need to alter the availability settings for the assignment in order for you to re-submit. Only your instructor can give you permission to do so, however.

What does 21% similarity mean when I turn in my Turntin assignment?

This message is coming from Turnitin, which is a plagiarism detection service used in the course. The percentage is telling you that 21% of your content overlaps between your paper and any other source. You should direct any questions about assignment specific messages and acceptable percentages to your instructor.

How do you upload a Turnitin assignment?
